Stranglehold is a podcast that wants to answer some questions. Why is New Hampshire first in the presidential primaries? Does being first give the state more power than others in deciding who will be president? Is there anything New Hampshire power players will not do to hold on to their power? This show has some thoughts.

The podcast hosts are five experienced journalists who work for New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR). Before joining NHPR, Lauren Chooljian covered politics for WBEZ Chicago. Jack Rodolico has worked on many investigative pieces for podcasts and radio. Casey McDermott covers politics for NHPR. Jason Moon hosts Bear Brook, a true crime podcast. Josh Rogers' reporting often appears on National Public Radio.

It's an understatement to say that New Hampshire demographics don't represent the US. The state is older, whiter, and more rural than the rest of the country. Moreover, New Hampshire is small. At 1.3 million residents, it has fewer people than even cities like San Antonio and Philadelphia. Yet, as discussed in the podcast, New Hampshire is a political Goliath. Every four years, America's most influential people descend on the state to win over its residents. Because it is the first state to hold a presidential primary, it sets the tone for the campaign. (Iowa technically comes first in the primary season, but it's a caucus, not a primary.)

The hosts want to know how New Hampshire became first. Why do they have, well, a Stranglehold here? The show outlines all the reasons why other states have a legitimate claim to being first in line. The podcast hosts interview local and national political players. In doing so, they uncover the real reasons behind New Hampshire's hold on power.
