Episode 182: Oppenheimer

Episode 182: Oppenheimer
As we close up shop on Season 7, we could not leave without talking about arguably the biggest movie of 2023. With 7 Oscars and an unfathomable amount of other prestigious awards, Oppenheimer is a once in a lifetime opportunity (or Oppentunity, if you will.) Christopher Nolan has finally unleashed Cillian Murphy to his fullest potentials, and Nolan's directing capabilities and Murphy's acting powers are both truly staggering. While 2023 was an amazing year for films, there was none better than this cautionary tale about the horrors we face and the guilt we carry regarding nuclear war. So put on your wide brimmed hat and light up that cigarette as we discuss this absolute masterpiece. We'll also reminisce over Barbenheimer, deliberate on virtual international disarmament in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, break down the ad sponsored collapsible room for American schools, and a ton (20,000 tons, to be precise) more. And we'll give you the rundown on upcoming bonus episodes in our off season, our thoughts on the 2024 Oscars, and a note about when to look for Season 8.Thank you so, so much for making this season a truly fantastic one!Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, Matthew Modine, Gary Oldman, Alex Wolff, Casey Affleck, Jack Quaid, Emma Dumont, Matthias Schweighöfer, David Dastmalchian, Christopher Denham, Josh Peck, Tony Goldwyn, Olivia Thirlby, and James Remar. Episode 181: Shin Godzilla (with JT Kelly and Michael Moss)

Episode 181: Shin Godzilla (with JT Kelly and Michael Moss)
Before Minus One got all the love and admiration it so rightfully deserved, there was another Godzilla movie not so long ago that really stomped its way into the hearts of millions. So after 180 episodes of the show, we're finally discussing the one, the only, the King of the Monsters (but not that movie.) We're of course talking about Godzilla, but not just any Godzilla movie; it's the 2016 masterclass in satire that is Shin Godzilla. What would it look like from a bureaucratic standpoint to actually try and stop a kaiju attack? This film shows exactly how it would (probably) go down. But that's not to say it doesn't have some incredibly shocking and horrific imagery that any kaiju lover would be sure to appreciate. So prepare your uniform and make sure your ramen doesn't get soggy as we talk about that truly wild face reveal of Gojira, plus the sensual world of commemorative popcorn buckets, the United States edging with its nuclear weapons, and creating a kaiju just for America. All of that and more with returning guests Michael Moss and JT Kelly, plus we'll spin the wheel to decide which film will have the honor of being our Season 7 finale episode next week.Shin Godzilla stars Hiroki Hasegawa, Mikako Ichikawa, Satomi Ishihara, Yutaka Takenouchi, Kengo Kora, Matsuo Satoru, Kazuo Takahashi, and Kanji Tsuda. Directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi. If you enjoy what we do, please subscribe to our show, and leave us a rating and some feedback as well!Follow us on TwitterCatch up with us on InstagramWatch clips on TikTokSubscribe on YouTubeJoin the discussion on our subredditBrought to you by HOLY PropagandaWanna talk to us? Episode 179: Judas and the Black Messiah (with Brandi Dewberry and Jenn Paulemon)
We couldn't let Black History Month end without discussing not only one of the best movies about Black history, but one of the best movies of the decade. While 2021's Judas and the Black Messiah indeed got the praise it was due at the Academy Awards, we still feel as if it hasn't gotten the admiration it deserves. So put on your shades and adjust that beret as we talk about the incredible performances from absolutely everyone in this movie, plus Florida schools banning the dictionary (yes, seriously), AI Nancy Pelosi, burying our dreams of ever receiving X-Men powers, and much, much more with returning guests Brandi Dewberry and Jenn Paulemon! And remember: anywhere there is people, there is power.Judas and the Black Messiah stars Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith Stanfield, Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Ashton Sanders, Algee Smith, Graham Lutes, Martin Sheen, and Lil Rel Howery. Episode 178: Stay Alive (with Brian Cottington of The Cinema Psychos Show)
Well, it's been two weeks since we've discussed a video game movie, so time to do another one. But this time, there's a twist: if you die in the game, you die for real! That's right, of course we're talking about none other than 2006's Stay Alive, and boy, would we like to find whoever made it and hurt them (not really – that’s just a quote from the movie.) Technically Disney's only slasher, this movie is capital B Bonkers. Insane plot contrivances, absurd character motivations, bizarre fashion choices, and god awful visual effects are enough to put this one up there with some of the worst films we've ever covered. So strap on your arm brace and turn that visor upside down as we discuss the film as well as check in on CanYouStayAlive.com, discovering some incredible fanfiction for the movie, and of course, deducing who the real villain was all along (cough Abigail cough). All of that and a hell of a lot more with special guest Brian Cottington of The Cinema Psychos Show. Let's butter this muffin! You can check out The Cinema Psychos Show on Apple Podcasts or wherever get your podcasts.Stay Alive stars Jon Foster, Samaire Armstrong, Frankie Muniz, Jimmi Simpson, Milo Ventimiglia, Sophia Bush, and Adam Goldberg. Episode 177: In the Mouth of Madness

Episode 177: In the Mouth of Madness
This episode is going to drive people absolutely mad! It's the week of Valentine's Day, and you know what that means: it's time to celebrate John Carpenter's utterly bleak view of the world. Or at least that's how we celebrate it around here. We're talking 1994's In the Mouth of Madness this week, and prepare yourself now because this one gets dark. Can we find a silver lining at the end of the world? We'll do our best. So handcuff your naked husband to your foot and light one up as we talk about everything from the K-Mart version of Metallica's Enter Sandman to soft corn porn (you read that right) and everything in between. God's not supposed to be a hack podcaster, but we are.In the Mouth of Madness stars Jurgen Prochnow, Sam Neill, Julie Carmen, and Charlton Heston. Episode 176: Mortal Kombat (1995) (with JT Kelly)

Episode 176: Mortal Kombat (1995) (with JT Kelly)
We're testing your might and maybe even your patience this week as we're back discussing video game adaptations (and yet another one from Paul W. S. Anderson) with the original Mortal Kombat from 1995. A film with some pretty great locations, art direction, and set dressing, which is honestly amazing considering all the scenery chewing going on in this movie. But a myriad of strange decisions like brainwashing the two best characters of the franchise into mindless zombies, casting a white dude to portray the Japanese God of Thunder, and tossing out "flawless victory’s” with total abandon make this a very sloppy movie at best and an absolute disaster at worst. So with that said, pack your bags, put on your $500 sunglasses (asshole), and board the dragon boat as we head to Outworld and discuss a whole plethora of topics like Western Union's outrageous telegram rates, Nathan's old band opening for Adema, Mortal Kombat being a thickly veiled metaphor for Scientology, and a hell of a lot more with returning guest JT Kelly. This is where you download our episode.Mortal Kombat (1995) stars Linden Ashby, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Robin Shou, Bridgette Wilson, Talisa Soto, and Christopher Lambert. Directed by Paul W. S. Episode 175: Don't Worry Darling (with Jennie Lee)
2022 was a rough year in the entertainment industry. First there was The Slap, and then there was The Spit – or the alleged spit, we should say. Has there been a wilder ride (one could even say an Olivia Wilde-r ride) than the production and press tour for Don't Worry Darling? A very messy release for a very messy movie. But is it as bad as everyone made it out to be? Straighten up that bow tie and pour yourself a cocktail so we can let you know. Plus, we'll discuss what all the symbolism means (or try to), Barbie's "feminism 101" backlash, Dustin misremembering Scrubs, and, of course, the spit heard 'round the world. All of that and more awaits you with returning guest Jennie Lee.Don't Worry Darling stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Olivia Wilde, Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, Nick Kroll, Kate Berlant, Douglas Smith, and Asif Ali. Episode 174: From Hell
Now that we've grieved the Fireflies last week, let's get back to having fun on the show. This time we're using 2001's From Hell as a jumping off point to talk about a lot of things: Johnny Depp sleepwalking through this film, Robbie Coltrane giving a Shakespearian performance in a completely different movie, and so, so much more. This one's yet another adaptation of Alan Moore's work that rightfully made him want to bury his head in the sand, and we'll talk about it all. So grab some grapes and pour yourself some Absinthe as we dissect this film. Plus, we'll talk about the worst time to be alive, Roger Ebert's wild movie reviews, Dustin's inability to pull off a convincing British accent, and plenty more. From Hell stars Ian Holm, Katrin Cartlidge, Heather Graham, Robbie Coltrane, and Johnny Depp. Directed by Albert and Allen Hughes. If you enjoy what we do, please subscribe to our show, and leave us a rating and some feedback as well!Follow us on TwitterCatch up with us on InstagramWatch clips on TikTokSubscribe on YouTubeJoin the discussion on our subredditBrought to you by HOLY Propaganda Wanna talk to us? Episode 173: Grave of the Fireflies (with Priscilla Hendry)
15-01-2024
Episode 173: Grave of the Fireflies (with Priscilla Hendry)
Oh yeah, we're doing it. And honestly, it took way too long for us to finally discuss this one, let alone anime in general. Grave of the Fireflies was only the third Studio Ghibli movie when it debuted in 1988, but it was just as powerful and evocative then as it still is today. So much so that a lot of people can only bring themselves to watch it once - but not us. A beautiful tragedy enveloped by incredible imagery, fantastic performances, and a deft hand in direction, Fireflies is well deserving of its perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. So grab your pickled plums and relax as we cover every second of this great film, plus dine-and-dashing, how Gen Z and Alpha feel about 9/11, what bugs smell like, and a lot more with returning guest Priscilla Hendry. Also, don't worry: we promise this episode isn't a bummer.Grave of the Fireflies stars Tsutomu Tatsumi, Ayano Shiraishi, Yoshiko Shinohara, and Akemi Yamaguchi. Episode 172: The Night Comes for Us

Episode 172: The Night Comes for Us
Like many others, Gareth Evans's The Raid was a gateway for us into the incredible world of Indonesian action films. For what used to feel like a bygone era, these movies simultaneously conjure up nostalgia for '70s and '80s kung fu films while also transcending the genre entirely, and Timo Tjahjanto's The Night Comes for Us pushes what we thought those movies could be to the absolute extreme. Body horror by way of punches and stabbings, this film is relentless. We'll cover it all in this episode, so straighten up your tie and grab the nearest "wet floor" sign as we discuss the dumb logic of Escape from Tarkov, Jakarta's seemingly indestructible infrastructure, Grok going woke ("unfortunately"), and of course, that slutty little cow. You know, this episode sounds like a fucking gangster movie. Don't you think so?The Night Comes for Us stars Joe Taslim, Iko Uwais, Julie Estelle, Sunny Pang, and Zack Lee. Episode 171: Triangle of Sadness
We decided we needed to kick off 2024 with a bit of sadness. That's right, this New Year's Day we're talking about the absolutely stellar Triangle of Sadness from 2022. Episode 168: The Flash (with Michael Moss)
If you thought one Ezra Miller on screen was annoying, wait until you see two of them. That's right, this week we're talking about the absolute abomination that is this year's The Flash. A fitting end to the DCEU, this movie is stunning - and not in a good way. Horrible CGI, completely dropped plot threads, and jokes that would have killed twenty years ago plague the entirety of this two and half hour train wreck. So crack open that can of "8 Hot Dogs" you've got in your fridge y tu mamá también as we speed through this episode (not really) discussing this putrid flick, including all of those terrible multiverse cameos, the worst Father's Day gift, the debate regarding the cover of The Dark Knight Returns, Spongebob's odd impact on this movie, and plenty more with returning guest Michael Moss. Rest in piss, DCEU!The Flash stars Ezra Miller, Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, Michael Keaton, Ian Loh, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, and Rudy Mancuso. Episode 167: Blue Is the Warmest Colour
There's never been a Palme d'Or given to not only the director but also the two leads of a film before 2013's Blue is the Warmest Colour, but there's rarely been a movie with as much power behind it like this one. Over the past decade, several articles detailing a mired production and testimonies of the troubling circumstances surrounding Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux's experiences making the movie seemed to have cast this one into a dark light, but there's so much good in this film that deserves to be celebrated - and we're here to do just that. So pour yourself an ice cold glass of strawberry milk and grab a hefty serving of spaghetti Bolognese cause we're talking everything Blue this week, as well as discussions about restaurants dropping their remixed versions of the Happy Birthday song, the subjective taste of La Croix, how much betters bars are than clubs, our Mount Rushmore of Neapolitan milk drinkers, and much, much more. And remember: love has no gender. Take whoever loves you.Blue Is the Warmest Colour stars Adèle Exarchopoulos, Léa Seydoux, Catherine Salée, Jeremie Laheurte, Aurélien Recoing, Sandor Funtek, Salim Kechiouche, and Mona Walravens. Episode 166: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
27-11-2023
Episode 166: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
After a (way) too long hiatus from discussing Korean cinema, we're back talking about the great Park Chan-wook and the first in the Vengeance Trilogy with 2002's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. The tonal shifts in this movie are gracefully done, the performances otherworldly, and the message troubling; all what you come to expect watching a Park film. Episode 165: Fast X
We're thinking about starting a new tradition around here for our Thanksgiving episode where each time we'll cover another Fast and Furious movie. We test this little experiment out this week by talking about this year's latest entry into this dumb-as-hell-yet-equally-entertaining franchise with Fast X. Jason Momoa seems to be the only one here that understood the assignment, and for that we salute him. This movie is somehow overstuffed and yet feels like it's continually spinning its wheels - but is it bad? We'll let you know as we discuss the film in this explosive episode, as well as topics like how much the Toretto’s neighbors must hate them, the secret about Han's dating profile, naming the most delicious pizza as seen in a movie, and much. much more. Here we go! Fast X stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jason Momoa, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, John Cena, Jason Statham, Sung Kang, Alan Ritchson, Daniela Melchior, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Brie Larson, and Rita Moreno. Directed by Louis Leterrier.
