After a miscarriage following the birth of their first child, photographers Mitch and Megan Vaughan built a greenhouse. That’s the one-liner, but their story goes a lot deeper, with a whole lot more God in it. This week, we’re talking about heartbreak and God’s methods in that madness.
When we designated this episode’s drop date as December 2nd, we didn’t know that was Baby M’s birthday. Baby M—Mitch and Megan’s second child—is still blessing others despite being in Heaven. We’re incredibly humbled and honored to be used for this purpose. This episode is dedicated to Baby M.

There was just something in me and I can even us sitting on the bed together and, you know, it was, I think it was the day or the day after. And in a puddle of tears, the only thing I could say or think of in that moment was: God will bring good out of this. I have no earthly idea how—period. And I had no idea how, but I firmly believe God will absolutely make something amazing out of this.

Because those things were said to me, and I didn’t want to hear it, but I think understanding that there will be things that are said to you that are said out of love and comfort that you’re going to want to deny. You’re not going to want to hear it. You’re going to want to tell them, “Just leave me alone, let me curl up in a ball.” And, you know, in the grand scheme of things, like, take that time, like you’re gonna, you’re probably gonna need it, but, but don’t stay there.

I like how in the midst it feels impossible and then you ride this storm out, right? And all of a sudden you play it in the right court, you play it in the Kingdom Court, right? And you say, “You know what, we’re going to be equally yoked, but first we’re going to yoke to Jesus.” And that way we can sit here and be equally yoked to one another and stand strong for one another.

You need the word in you before the hard time comes and then that you had to wait for it to warm up before you sealed it. And how often is it that we don’t feel battle-tested until we’ve healed, but then once we’ve healed, once we’ve warmed back up and defrosted our heart from whatever pain had happened, then he can seal it in us. All those lessons learned are now sealed and preserved, and now they’re battle-tested and weathered for the next time we can’t write it. Like you said, we can not predict it, but the lessons he gives us are just so rich. And multi-layer just like the Bible itself is you had to actually go and get somebody to dig into that, into that hard ground. And that’s what we have to do with Jesus.
