This Little Light discovers the musical journeys of inspiring artists. The podcast host is none other than Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. Michael "Flea" Balzary is a founding member alongside Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, and Jack Irons. Although members changed over the years, Flea remained. The band has toured the world, selling millions of records.
In 2001, Flea cofounded the non-profit Silverlake Conservatory of Music. He and his friend Keith "Tree" Barry wanted to make music education accessible to the community. It's this logic that is foundational to This Little Light. In this series, Flea interviews different artists about their music education. He knows everyone has followed a different path, and each one is fascinating. Those reasons are why he wants to share these journeys with audiences. Artists included are notable musicians like Finneas, Thundercat, and Rick Rubin. He also talks with bandmate Kiedis.
Flea interviews Margo Price, a country singer and songwriter, on This Little Light. He praises her for combining the best parts of country music. Margo explains that she needed to experience life to discover her sound. She recalls buying her first guitar and relocating to Nashville. Record companies tried to pressure her to be something she wasn't. Throughout her journey, Margo talks about music as therapy. Flea admits that he couldn't imagine life without the creative process.
Another fascinating interview is with singer and writer Patti Smith. Flea introduces Patti as an amazing poetic artist and one of his favorite people on the planet. She believes she's more of a performer than a musician and talks about what this means for her.
Flea asks Patti how she and her husband felt about music being a part of their children's education. They focused on keeping them away from the industry and living a simpler life outside of fame. Patti also talks about a childhood teacher who gave her hope for humanity through music.
This Little Light showcases the paths artists follow to achieve their musical dreams. The podcast acts as Flea's love letter to music.
