Listening Time: English Practice

Sonoro | Conner Pe

This podcast is for English learners who want to practice their listening comprehension in a natural way. In each episode, an American speaker talks about different topics without reading a script. He speaks in a natural way, with native words and phrases, but he speaks a little more slowly and clearly than other native speakers. Each episode includes the transcript, which you can use to help you understand the speaker. Our Editor's Take

English learners might find it hard to listen to English-language podcasts. That's even more the case if they are not complete beginners but just not yet fluent. This is why Conner Pe decided to create the Listening Time podcast. He wanted to help a wider audience of students learn English.

As a language learner, Listening Time podcast host Pe understands the struggles of mastering a new language. Not only is the host a longtime English teacher, but he also speaks Spanish and Portuguese. In addition, he's learning French and Greek. During his studies, Pe realized that podcasts are an impeccable tool. He was able to listen to them while doing other tasks. That way he could continue learning throughout the day. Yet, there is a huge difference between podcasts produced for beginners and those for native speakers.

Unlike this podcast for language learners, others usually come based on a script. The hosts read the text and repeat phrases as they go. This type of listening comprehension training might be helpful in the early stages. But as the learner becomes more familiar with the language, it becomes less effective. Native speakers tend to speak at a rapid pace and use a lot of slang. Going straight to that from a scripted podcast can result in frustration.

With Listening Time, Pe hopes to create a podcast that bridges the two. It can prepare the listeners on their journey towards fluency. The main way the podcast does that is by using natural language. In each episode, Pe picks a topic and talks about it for around 30 minutes. It can be anything from board games to extreme sports. He doesn't plan out his speaking points in advance. This makes the language feel organic and not mundane. Pe makes sure that his speaking voice is slower, so the listener can understand every word. This provides a more natural learning experience. Listeners hear a more realistic language tone at the right pace for learning.

On Listening Time, Pe discusses many topics. That includes everything from US culture to vacations to taxes. New episodes drop each week.
