A Supreme Court Justice is supposed to “place a loyalty to the Constitution, the laws and ethical principles above private gain,” and as a part of ethics-related laws for all federal employees, they are supposed to “submit public financial disclosures,” which “includes gifts over a few hundred dollars,” and if they don’t, “they can face criminal charges or stiff civil penalties.” The controversy surrounding Justice Thomas’s conduct stems from his acceptance of gifts and travel accommodations from people and organizations with an interest in matters before the Supreme Court.
