"DON'T SHOP...ADOPT!"Every time I see this phrase pop up in my social media feed, I know that there will be some hateful comments about people who choose to get their dog from a breeder or the breeders themselves. On the surface, these three words are harmless, amounting to basic marketing or preferences from individuals passionate about rescue. Not a bad thing, right? But inevitably there will be comments akin to "Dog breeders are the devil and people who go to dog breeders are the devil's minions." Sometimes this sentiment is implied or outright stated right in the social media post itself.Maybe you've even had personal conversations with people about the topic. "OH MY HORROR, you went to a BREEDER? What's wrong with you? Don't you know how overrun our local SPCA is right now? Keep her quiet and calm for a full week they said. No running, jumping, swimming, tug, or fetch for 7-10 days they said. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?This is standard protocol when your dog gets spayed or neutered. Also complete folly for most dog owners, especially those with energetic breeds like my Labrador Retriever. Moxie got spayed recently and in S01E007 I talk about the experience. We discuss the Cone o' Shame/Donut of Despair, calming meds (we used Trazadone), and how long she actually went before it became difficult to keep her "unexcited." Spoiler alert: not long.Most responsible pet owners deal with the spay/neuter situation, but even as common as it is, it can be challenging.
