Only One In The Room

Laura Cathcart Robbins

Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

Scott Talks to Jillian Lauren
Jillian Lauren is a writer, storyteller, adoption advocate, and rock-wife. She is the New York Times best-selling author of the memoirs “Everything You Ever Wanted” and “Some Girls: My Life in a Harem”. She was the only journalist to extensively interview Samuel Little, the most prolific serial killer in American history. Her latest book about the time she spent interviewing Sam Little is called “Behold the Monster: Confronting America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer”. Her writing has appeared in New York Magazine, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Los Angeles Times,  Elle,  The Daily Beast, Salon, and many others. Laura opens the show by asking Jillian about being an adoption advocate, before getting into her newest book “Behold the Monster”. Jillian talks about how rampant crime was in Los Angeles in the 80s, making it difficult to discover Sam Little as a serial killer. This leads to the kind of victims Sam Little would seek out, and the work that went into finally catching him.  Jillian then discuses visiting Sam Little in prison by having to pretend she was his friend so the guards would let her in. Her extensive time spent with Sam Little led her to solve one of his murders that was previously deemed a cold case.  Before they wrap, Jillian talks about how her interviews with Sam Little negatively affected her home life  For More On Jillian Lauren:Email - jillianlauren@me.com                Kingstonfullmedia@gmail.com               audrey@tgcworldwide.comManager  - Charlie Fusco, TGC Worldwide, charlie@tgcworldwide.com Website - https://www.jillianlauren.com Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/jillianlauren Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jillianlaurenauthor TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@jillianlaurenauthor X:  https://twitter.com/jillylauren Youtube  - https://www.youtube.com/user/jillianlaurenBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support.

Scott Talks to David Manheim
David Manheim is an American podcaster who currently hosts the popular addiction podcast Dopey. Dave slid into the embrace of heroin and stayed there for around 15 years, until just four months before he started the podcast in 2016 with his friend Chris, who he had met in rehab. Unfortunately, Chris died of a drug overdose in 2018, along with many other people who were featured on the podcast over the years.  Laura opens the show by asking David about how he fell into addiction. David explains his love for marijuana, the weed culture, and how working for a weed delivery business eventually led him to acquiring and trying heroin.  David then talks about his former podcast partner Chris, who he had met in rehab. The two started their podcast Dopey together, and put out episodes every week until Chris’ death from a drug overdose in 2018.  This leads David to recall numerous other guests on the Dopey podcast that have also overdosed over the years. After the death of these people, but especially his former host Chris, David talks about how the show has changed and expresses his willingness to continue putting out weekly episodes.  For More On David Manheim:  Email - dopeypodcast@gmail.com  Website - https://about.me/davidmanheim Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/dopeypodcast/?hl=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidmanheim/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Davidmanheim/ X:  https://x.com/davidmanheim  Podcast - https://dopeypodcast.com/the-podcast/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support.

Scott Talks to Jodi Miller
Jodi Miller is a comedian, writer, and actress who’s been performing stand up for over 20 years and has also done 4 military tours including going overseas to entertain troops in Afghanistan. She currently works as the head writer for the syndicated comic game show Funny You Should Ask, and she hosts the show The World’s Funniest Weather. Her new comedy special Decades in the Making, is available now on Youtube.  Laura opens the show by talking about where her and Scott met Jodi, as well as asking her about her thoughts on being a mom growing up and when she finally decided to try to conceive. After being unable to conceive naturally, that was when Jodi decided to adopt.  Jodi then tells the story behind adopting her daughter, which included a last minute and unexpected phone call from her lawyer instructing her to fly out to Kentucky the following day, during COVID, to pick up her daughter. This leads to a realization of just how hard it is to be a single parent to a young child.  After that, Laura asks Jodi about her current dating life as a single mother in Los Angeles, as well as her old podcast Don’t Call Me Ma’am. Jodi then tells a popular story from her life about nailing the audition for America’s Got Talent, only to be excused by producers for no reason. This leads to some praise from Laura over Jodi’s work on the comic TV game show Funny You Should Ask.  For More On Jodi Miller:Email:   jodimillercomic@gmail.comWebsite: http://www.jodimillercomedy.com Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/jodimillercomic/ LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodi-miller-a70a008/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JodiMillercomic/ X:  https://twitter.com/JodiMillerComic Podcast - Don't Call Me Ma'am https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dont-call-me-maam/id1521281485 Book- https://www.amazon.com/stores/Jodi-Miller/author/B0049OK9S6?ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=trueBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support.

Scott Talks to Dr. Michael Caparrelli
Dr. Michael Caparrelli graduated from Zion Bible College, and thereafter, pastored an inner city church for 16 years. In 2021, he finished his PhD in Advanced Studies in Behavioral Science. Currently, he’s a keynote speaker in churches, prisons, schools & other venues across the U.S. on a wide variety of mental health subjects. He’s authored five books that help the psychologically troubled overcome life adversities. His most recent book, Monster Mirror, features his 100 Hour Case Study on David Berkowitz, the ‘Son of Sam’, a convicted serial killer who held New York City hostage with fear from 1976 – 1977 and gave his life to Christ in prison in 1988.  Dr. Caparrelli starts off by giving a bit of his background as a pastor for 16 years, before deciding to get his PhD after suffering 2 heart attacks. He goes on to explain his troubled childhood with a father in prison and being sent to juvenile prison as a teenager.  He then dives into the case of David Berkowitz, from first hearing about “the Son of Sam” as a kid to eventually meeting with him in prison. Laura asks Michael about jailhouse conversions, and how he deals with the emotional exhaustion that comes with being a pastor who visits violent criminals in prison.  After that they get more in-depth about the life of David Berkowitz, the crimes he committed, and various family members who were affected by his murders.
