It was a tough week for law enforcement in South Carolina with the shooting of a Charleston County deputy, the killing of a SLED K-9 and the death of a deputy in Richland County. Illiteracy is a nationwide problem that affects children and adults, and it’s something that’s not going to disappear any time soon. A new mental health unit will be opening at the Charleston County jail. The Restoration unit is a partnership between the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Department of Mental Health to aid residents who suffer from a mental health disorder and provide them with more treatment options. William Malcolm is CCSO’s mental health director, a position created a year ago that is intended to help people leaving the Detention Center gain access to resources that can help prevent them from being re-arrested. He also visits people in the community who have frequent contact with deputies. His goal is to limit the need for future law enforcement involvement for those struggling with mental illness.
