Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is released this Wednesday in French cinemas! A feature Film whose plot takes place a year before that of the eponymous anime. But can we really understand this Film without having seen the series?

This is THE anime phenomenon of the moment! Dedicated Series of the year at the 2021 Crunchyroll Awards,  Jujutsu Kaisen has made a name for itself among the most significant works of its generation. And with such a resounding success, the transition from the small to the big screen was unmissable.

It was therefore after an acclaimed first season of 24 episodes that a prequel film was announced for cinema distribution. An adaptation of volume 0 centered on a brand new character and whose action takes place long before that of the anime. Is it therefore possible to discover this feature film without having seen a single episode of its series? Not so sure.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 tells us about the unusual daily life of Yuta Okkotsu, a high school student cursed by the vengeful spirit of his first love, who died in a car accident. Haunted by this nightmarish presence for six years, the young boy tries to end his life when he is approached by a mysterious exorcist who claims he can help him.

On paper, this film may seem accessible to new audiences as well as manga and/or anime fans. However, we advise you to discover it after reading or watching a minimum of chapters, because Jujutsu Kaisen 0 does not really take the time to re-explain the rules of its universe, nor to introduce its characters, other than that , original, by Yuta.

Indeed, this adaptation, like the volume it adapts, was released well after the basic story created by Gege Akutami . The story therefore unfolds on the assumption that you already know its inner workings, even if a very brief reminder is nevertheless made at the start of the film. After this short minute of exposure, the plot unfolds without returning to what season 1 of the anime has already stated.

If you don't know who the characters are, their hierarchy and their specific abilities, it will be difficult for you to understand all the intricacies of the film. Nevertheless, it will remain an excellent moment of entertainment, filled with action, emotions and animation sequences worthy of the greatest specialized studios.

And if we turn the question differently: is it necessary to see the film if we have already seen the series? Yes. Because, unlike other anime spin-off feature films like  One Piece and My Hero Academia , Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is canon. This is a genuine and official work grafted onto the original artwork and is therefore hard to ignore.

In addition, this one introduces characters destined to return to the series. It is therefore the perfect opportunity to discover them, in order to be completely up to date for the release of season 2 scheduled soon.

As you will have understood, it is not essential to know Jujutsu Kaisen and its universe to enjoy this film, but it is still strongly recommended to have an optimal time in your cinema.

You can catch up on all of season 1 on Crunchyroll and Wakanim platforms in VOSTFR as in VF. And if you are more readers than spectators, the manga is currently being published by Ki-oon editions with 13 volumes.
